Hello Neighbours

It's not often you hear someone say they enjoyed going down King Street. Instead it's usually frustration about construction, a red light at every block, or circling for parking. But I still  remember the fun I had biking and walking the wrong way on King Street last year.

That was because of the annual Open Streets, when King St East closes to traffic and gives us an opportunity to experience our city in a whole new way, without cars. I had a chance to take time to talk with the people who make this city tick: community organizations sharing what they do, vendors showing off their work, entertainers brightening our afternoon and local businesses spilling out onto the sidewalk to say hello.

The food at the Kitchen Collective was a highlight. There's something special about watching locally made dishes come together right in front of you, then eating them in the middle of a street you normally just drive through without a second thought. Add in a few selfie stops along the way, and it felt like a neighbourhood-wide block party.

Part of that sense of fun comes from the activation hubs spaced along the route, each with its own personality. Hop from hub to hub, grab a bite, chat with an organizer, pick up something from a local maker, and let the day unfold. Open Streets is back this Sunday, with activities running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, there's plenty of time to make a day of it.

Of course, Open Streets is just part of the week. We’ve rounded up what's happening across Hamilton below, from markets and live music to family-friendly outings. Go to the full list of 200+ events and 100+ live music acts.

If you liked this week's issue please share it with a friend who's only ever seen King Street through a windshield.
