The Pole Shebang
Review by Julian Nicolson
The vibe is fun. The play shows the life of a pole dancer, and it’s not what you expect.
As you may expect, the set is a large silver pole, securely mounted on a black base. Creator Andrea James Lui starts the show with an impressive pole dance, emphasizing the skill and physicality needed for this art form.
Lui then introduces herself and gets the audience involved in some warm-up routines before seguing into the plot of the show, which involves her being invited to compete in the largest competition for pole dancers in the country.
From here, we’re led down a fun and energetic path involving audience participation from two incredibly brave volunteers, some spectacular costume changes, more impressive dancing, and moments of surprising introspection and emotion. I also learned far more about pole dancing than I ever thought I would, including the surprising difference between the experiences of male and female dancers at competitions, and the joys of wearing 8-inch heels.
This is a fun, high-energy romp through the world of pole dancing, and is highly recommended.
