Sex Goddess
Reviewed by Tamara Kamermans
The vibe is female self-actualization vs. the patriarchy/listening party.
Rayna, played by Riel Reddick–Stevens, is heading out for the night, and little does she know she’ll be reaching her own self-actualization before the morning light. She’s going to meet some ne’er-do-wells (characters she will also play with comic delight). You’ll be mesmerized as she sings (beautifully), dances, falls down, gets back up again and kicks some patriarchy ass.
It’s like a level-up Rock Star video game for women. At each stage, she learns the way in which she’s been taught to pander to men. She defeats the demons and keeps moving toward her authentic self. Along the way, she creates some obscenely funny characters that try to hold her back.
What lady in the audience hasn’t met Mr Money? Then, she meets some obscenely funny characters that help her get to the top. With a few “spliff” breaks along the way to help power up her energy and fuel her creativity, the night will bring her a coveted record deal and a new sense of self. All this happens on a bare stage with one chair and a microphone.
You’ll cheer out loud when she shakes off the male oppression and sings her song of freedom. I dare you to stay in your seat.
When it’s all over, pick up a few affirmation stickers to keep the party going.
