Red Hot Cherry Poppin’ Experience
Reviewed by Ryan McGreal
The vibe is frisky, flirtatious and ever so slightly ramshackle.
Suzanne Cutler and Jason Thompson’s Red Hot Cherry Poppin’ Experience offers a titillating and relatable tour through one woman’s journey into sexual maturity.
Part diva, part sex coach, part domme, Cutler weaves fluidly between racy, intimate storytelling, sex-positive mentoring and nowhere-to-hide crowd work, drawing plenty of laughter and just the right amount of cringe. She has the playful confidence to dispatch both teasing and raunchy moments with verve.
As her inept butler and unflappable sidekick, Thompson delivers big laughs with his enthralling vocal delivery and some truly extraordinary physical comedy, all while making sure Cutler stays centre stage.
Despite a few minor opening-night glitches, Cutler and Thompson remain unfazed, their chemistry so natural that at times it’s hard to tell whether an exchange is precisely choreographed or improvised vamping. Either way, it makes for a very fun ride.
The Centre for Talking Arts on James South is a great venue for a show this intimate, but seating is limited, so you might want to book your tickets soon to avoid disappointment.
Note: this show contains explicit sexual themes and spicy language, and you might just find yourself in the hot seat. Rated 18A.
