Nahanni Gold: A True Canadian Legend
Reviewed by Bryan Boodhoo
The vibe of Nahanni Gold is historic.
In this 45-minute, one-person show, Mordred brings the audience into the world of the early 1900s in the Yukon. The first Yukon gold rush has passed, but there is still gold fever in the air.
Mordred performs three interconnected monologues that tell the tale of the untimely demise of the McLeod brothers, who were killed in the Nahanni Valley while prospecting for gold. It’s a story of particular significance to Canadian History buffs or those who enjoy true horror.
Mordred, under the direction of Lucas McDonell, does an admirable job of creating three distinct characters. The changes in costumes were smart and well achieved. And the change in speech and accent, sometimes subtle and sometimes quite dramatic, was well acted.
Although Modred’s performance was quite striking, at times I felt that he could have quickened the pace, particularly in the first two monologues. There was noticeably more joy and energy in the third monologue.
Overall, I think this show will be well worth the ticket, particularly for those into horror stories.
