Hum-Buzz
Reviewed by Laura Van Alphen
The vibe of Hum-Buzz is frenetic.
As we enter the performance space, there is a single person sitting on stage, back to the audience. She turns around and then, surprisingly, begins brushing her teeth. She smiles, grins really, and then her frenzied monologue begins.
The performer’s energy is captivating as she flits from topic to topic, fast and then slow, and even when I couldn’t place exactly where I was, I was happy to be along for the ride. The setting is mainly someone’s bathroom, in the hidden corners where dust and lint and yes, toothpaste, collect and create a perfect environment for growth. Did I mention the character lives in this bathroom, where she can “collect every ugly thing and make it beautiful?”
I should also mention that the character is in love with the owner of this bathroom. She knows their secrets and accepts the filthiest parts of them, collected over time and used to create something lasting, something to survive long after she is gone.
Hum-Buzz is chaotic and compelling, with a surprise twist. Coarse language and some sexual content make it appropriate for 13+.
