Catch Me in the Kitchen Story Adventures
Reviewed by Anne Bokma
The vibe of this show is enchanting storytelling for kids.
One colourful backdrop, two bilingual actors and three simple wooden bins are all it takes to transport the audience of Catch Me in the Kitchen to a land of famous fairytales reimagined. Writers and performers Ginette Mohr and Stephen LaFernie have reworked the stories of Goldilocks and The Three Bears and The Three Little Pigs with plenty of delightful antics and surprises to keep young children in the audience rapt while also appealing to parents with a modern message of manners as well as a little language education (a large helping of French words are inserted into the storytelling).
Mohr is all loopy physical comedy and goofy appeal (a modern-day Carol Burnett) while LaFernie generally plays the straight man (or, in this case, the straight frog, wolf and papa and baby bear) allowing Mohr to command the stage with her endearing presence, clownish antics and polished delivery as she takes on various character roles. Her impressive skills, honed with such companies as the Stratford Festival, Young People’s Theatre and Drayton Entertainment, are on full display here.
Catch Me in the Kitchen is classic storytelling, finely crafted and expertly delivered in a way that will satisfy both young and old(er) alike.
