A Question Of Character
Reviewed by Tamara Kamermans
The vibe is art vs. politics vs. moral responsibility.
This is a finely crafted piece of theatre on every level. It’s a common theme in today’s society that we grapple with and put into practice the idea of cancelling an artist’s body of work based on their moral atrocities in other areas of life. Does their crime negate their ability? Is the product somehow the fruit of a poison tree?
You’ll be asking yourself these questions and more as the show deep dives into the work of Leni Riefenstahl, a groundbreaking filmmaker and creator of Nazi propaganda. Paula Wing as Leni and Tanisha Taitt as the mysterious interviewer, Paulina Mitchell, take this script to its pinnacle. These are formidable performances that will keep you riveted for the full 90 minutes and thinking for days afterward.
All the elements are working in this production: the costuming, the blocking, the set design, and the acting. One could imagine this piece as the inspiration for a screenplay. Somehow, you’ll want to see it again because the ideas are so important and the execution so brilliant.
A great night of theatre!
