500 Doubloons

Reviewed by Bryan Boodhoo

The vibe of 500 Doubloons is imaginative.

In this piece, five actors playing pirates, find themselves in the back room of a bar after their ship almost capsizes. To kill the time, they try to fill in the background of an old pirate yarn. In that tale, a man pays 500 Doubloons to see a woman naked and nothing more. Given that 500 Doubloons is the equivalent of 40,000 dollars today, this tale, if it’s true, is a grand mystery.

Each of the five members of the cast then act out different versions of the story. Most are farsical, as you would imagine a group of actors would be stuck in the back room of a bar.

What makes this show special is the energy and charisma the entire cast brings to the various story telling. The pace is electric and at times I felt I was watching a Second City show.

Kudos must go to all of the seasoned cast but in particular Katherine Teed-Arthur, who, besides acting in the piece is also the playwright.  She really creates a freight train of a comedy extravaganza that ends unexpectedly and perfectly.

This show is a good fit for anyone who appreciates improve comedy or pirate shows. However, I would suggest leaving the children at home.
