The vibe of The Seawitch Speaks by Sara Anderson is speaking your truth. Anderson takes on the persona of the Real Seawitch from the 1989 Disney version of The Little Mermaid. She plans to set the record straight on the ins and outs and manipulations of Seawitch representation and the fate of the well-loved Little Mermaid.
She says if you want your story told the right way, the best thing to do is to drag yourself out of the ocean with your tentacles hanging out and tell it.
As a solo story teller, Andersen captures our imagination throughout with humour and pristine pacing. She’s an enigmatic, finely dressed for human consumption, sea creature that keeps her audience hanging on her every reframing of this classic tale.
Although absolutely entertaining for adults, children, who are a little more intimately entwined with the tale, will certainly benefit the most from Anderson’s unabridged side of the story. It’s never too soon to learn that not everything is at it seems and there isn’t only one perspective on land or in the ocean.
