Walking into Punky’s Flat, the new Dundas pub that opened September 1st, you get the feeling you have walked back in time. With exposed brick walls, deep crimson colour paint , 14 vintage chandeliers, candelabras, pressed tin and an assortment of antique chairs, you could believe you’ve stepped into 1895, the year the building was erected.

But take a closer look and you will notice design features pop out that make the space so enjoyably eclectic: inverted porch posts used at the corners of the seating booths, a bar made from a pool table complete with the corner pocket and a collection of antique repurposed wooden arches with mirror-backed shelves stocked with colourful spirits (the alcohol kind..not the mystical 😉).

There’s a wide variety of seating: booths for 4, tables for 2, tables for 4, bar seating  and a  large wooden table for 8 which we filled.  With our large group, we were able to try and share quite a few things from the menu. The cocktail menu is extensive and the beer menu has a proud focus on local brews. The hip 20-something-year-old dining with us exclaimed “This beer is delicious and one of the least expensive in the city”.

The kale caesar salad had a delicious tangy dressing and was accompanied by smoky bacon. The ample farro arugula salad had a wonderfully tangy lemon dressing with crunchy pistachios finished with beautiful watermelon radishes. The broccoli soup was perfectly cheesy and creamy. The chicken pot pie was flavourful, homemade, full of vegetables and made with buttery, flaky puff pastry. We also enjoyed trying the various flatbreads.

It’s clear care was taken to restore and honour this gem of a building. Our group noticed a few of the less obvious details too. One friend came back from the bathroom and told the whole table “You have to see this!” Antique tiling, deep sinks. Another noticed the sound system: several speakers hanging and evenly distributed for uniform sound.

Punky’s Flat feels like a place you want to hang out in. So many thoughtful touches on the decor and the food and more. The vibe of Punky’s Flat is “everything old is new again” with a tasty and stylish twist.
