Discovering: McCallister's Sandwiches

Fresh, Handcrafted, Friendly - With No 'Home Alone' Feeling

I sure do love a good sandwich!  I know it’s not a fancy meal but there’s something wonderful about being able to hold a hefty sandwich in your hands and taking a great big bite out of it’s homemade bread.

And that’s just what I found at McCallister’s Handcrafted Sandwiches this past Valentine’s day, fresh sandwiches containing a variety of textures and a combo of flavours.

The menu includes options for us all. For meat lovers there are 4 alternatives including the top selling ‘Sullivan’ ($15) with buttermilk chicken (sourced locally from Fenwood Farms in Ancaster) on home made sweet potato english muffins.

We demolished the vegetarian ‘Vincenzo’ ($14) with lightly breaded eggplant, tomato sauce, parmesan, pesto, mozzarella and kale caesar on a crisp and chewy Ace Bakery baguette.

And we also enjoyed the vegan option ‘Chay’ ($14) which was a tasty marinated tofu Banh Mi with plenty of fresh and pickled toppings.

There are two salads on offer - we had the flavourful golden beet with apple and feta and they also offer a Mac and Cheese (with pickles!)  For kids there is a pizza sub ‘Little Nero’ ($10).

While we were there, a fresh batch of their homemade focaccia came out of the oven and we couldn’t resist trying it too….yum…crisp outside and airy inside.  They bake their English Muffins and focaccia daily.  And to wrap it up, we had to try the cookie with dark chocolate and dried cherries from a big glass jar on the countertop

Our sandwiches were freshly made and arrived quickly. There are 4 stools at the counter top window perch. No bathroom. Metered street parking outside.

This new spot opened late January at 307 Barton Street East (just East of Victoria), right next to J Waldron Butchers, a friend of the owner Kevin Evelegh who was friendly and welcoming, as were all the McCallister’s staff.

The shop had a steady stream of happy customers and between them we managed to talk with Kevin. We asked him about the shop’s name and found out it was a nod to another Kevin - the character Kevin McCallister - who was the boy left Home Alone in the movie.

Thanks McCallister’s for your scrumptious sandwiches that we happily polished off while sitting at your sunny window perch watching the world go by. We certainly felt at home and not alone.
