Hello Neighbours
The first weekend of October marked the 10th anniversary of the Steeltown Stomp, a self-guided fundraising hike and stair climb across the Hamilton escarpment. Our five escarpment staircases add up to more than 2,000 steps, making them our very own free outdoor stair stepper. They’re also a wonderful place to meet people, connect with nature and set goals. For example, 70 trips up and down the Wentworth Stairs is the equivalent of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro! The Stomp is organized by the Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club, which hosts its second talk at The Westdale this Sunday: On the Trail of Wellness: How Nature Improves Our Cognitive, Physical and Social Well-Being.
Mixing movement, connection and learning is featured in the work of author Arthur C. Brooks, who draws on more than 80 years of data from the Harvard Study of Adult Development. In his article for The Atlantic, “The Seven Habits That Lead to Happiness in Old Age,” Brooks suggests that well-being works like a retirement account: the sooner you invest, the greater the returns. He calls it a “Happiness 401(k),” (or for us Canadians, a happiness RRSP), where exercise, learning and connection are deposits that compound over decades.
That idea of investing early is especially relevant for bone health for women. Research for the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study was partially done right here at McMaster University The study shows that strength supports bone health, mobility, metabolism and mental well-being. Hamilton’s community of trainers, practitioners and studios is helping lead that shift locally. Trainer Michela Beneforti is taking it a step further with a Women’s Wellness Morning on Sunday, October 25 at the Hamilton Convention Centre for women over 30 to learn, move and connect. (Check out our PS below for a chance to win free passes!)
There’s plenty happening around the city this week to keep everyone moving, learning and connecting. Aeris Körper’s Neighbourhood Moves Workshop Series kicks off this Saturday. The same day (starting at 4 pm), the Over 30s Day Party promises a fun evening out with you still in bed by 10 pm or head out Sunday morning for a coffee and walk with Hamilton Girls Walking Club. Check out the full list of 200+ events and 100+ live music acts happening this week.
If you liked this week’s issue please share it with a friend whose retirement plan is solid but whose happiness RRSP could use a few deposits.
